Ahmedabad : The Ahmedabad zonal unit of Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), on Wednesday nabbed two persons – Gulab Chand Gupta and Tufail Khan – who were involved in manufacture of gutka in Gujarat.
Acting on an intelligence input, the team raided the unit located in Irana village of Kadi taluka in Mehsana district of the state.
Upon further investigation, it was learnt that the firm illegally manufactured gutka (pan masala containing tobacco) and got it cleared without payment of Goods and Services Tax (GST).
A total of Rs 8 crore worth of GST was evaded in the process of illegal manufacturing and supply of gutka by the duo.
Manufacturing, selling and consuming gutka is banned in Gujarat and Maharashtra under Food Safety and Standards Act of respective states.
DGGI officials also unearthed documents, which when scrutinized corroborated the modus operandi of illegal manufacture and clearance of “Dubai” and “SNG” brand gutkha without payment of GST to Bhiwandi and Mumbai.
The duo has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days by the additional chief metropolitan magistrate, Ahmedabad.
