CBI Books Women Customs Officers in Gold Smuggling Case

Kochi : The CBI has registered a case against three persons, including a Woman Customs officer at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, in connection with gold smuggling. The Anti-Corruption Unit of CBI, Kochi, registered the FIR last week after a preliminary inquiry was conducted following the arrest of a gold smuggler from the airport last month.

The case has been registered against Ms. G Ranimol, Head havildar of Customs (Air Customs), Thiruvananthapuram Airport, for facilitating the smugglers; and Abdul Karim Sabeer, Palli Street, Poonthura and Aboobacker Shaffi of Manikkomvilakom, Poonthura who were involved in gold smuggling. As per the FIR, Sabeer and Shaffi booked tickets through Ozone Travels in Manacaud and left to Dubai on March 9 for allegedly smuggling gold.

Shaffi collected the gold from an unidentified person and handed over the wallet to Sabeer at the Dubai airport. Both then arrived at Thiruvananthapuram airport on March 10. It is alleged G Ranimol, who was deployed at the Customs exit gate since 7 am on the day, left her duty position and came to the baggage screening area for abetting the gold smuggling.On arriving at the airport, Sabeer allegedly handed over the wallet containing gold to Ranimol. The bag got clearance from the X-Ray baggage checking without hindrance. Ranimol later carried the wallet containing the gold biscuits through the Customs clearance area and handed it over to Sabeer.

However, Sabeer was nabbed following an intelligence input at the green channel and the gold weighing 980.1 g was seized from him.The Customs Department, too, has initiated an inquiry against the officer. CBI has registered a case against the accused persons under IPC Section 120-B and 420, and Sections 13(2), 13(1)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. CBI Inspector Baiju A is investigating the case.

As per the FIR, Sabeer and Shaffi booked tickets through Ozone Travels in Manacaud and left to Dubai on March 9 for allegedly smuggling gold.
